Sometimes the best things are also the simplest. I have many Indian cookbooks, but there is one dish I always come back to. Dal was the first Indian dish I learnt how to make, and it continues to be my favorite to eat.
The red masoor dal used in this recipe is mild and almost sweet and […]

This is really cool, I found a whole network of yogis! WoYoPracMo is an inspirational and supportive yoga community that was started January 1, 2008, challenging yogis to practice every day for the month of January. (Hence the name World Yoga Practice Month.) But when January was up they all liked the community so much they decided to continue.
If you’re interested, check it […]

Earlier this week my yoga teacher read the poem Today by Hafiz at the end of class, and it made me walk home slowly, looking at trees, flowers, dogs, squirrels and people, and just feel appreciation for life.
The poem can be found in the book The Gift:
Today
I
Do not
Want to step so quickly
Over a beautiful line on God’s palm
As I move through […]

Today it is exactly half a year since my last migraine attack. My Excedrin Migraine bottle is past it’s expiration date, I enjoy my chai, drink red wine with dinner whenever I want to, and I eat enough chocolate to make up for lost time. How did this happen? Can yoga prevent migraines?

Do you take your kids to the library for books and story time? Now it looks like you can come for yoga classes too. The Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich, Illinois, has started a Yoga for Preschoolers class, running every Thursday morning in May. The Lake Zurich Courier reports that the kids love […]

I am now the proud member of the Madison Market co-op. While reading Nina Planck’s Real Food (which is a whole other discussion), I started looking for a store that sells organic, local, and grass-fed meat, seafood and dairy (well, obviously the seafood won’t be grass-fed, but you get the point.) I like knowing where […]

This past week I have not been feeling very motivated to do yoga. One day I even decided to clean my bathroom to avoid going to yoga class. I just felt like watching America’s Next Top Model, and absolutely not do yoga. Why does this happen? What should I do about it?
Turns out, nothing. I just […]

The Times of India reports today that celebrities in India, and especially Bollywood stars, are embracing the yoga fitness trend. In the article Celebs stay fit, the yoga way, the fitness expert Leena Mogre is quoted saying:
More and more celebs are taking up yoga because of the results it delivers and also because they have […]

A few Sundays ago I went for a karma vinyasa class with Tripsichore’s Edward Clark at Yogi Way in Seattle. All proceeds from the class went to War Child International, a network of organizations working to help children in war zones. Devoting your practice to a cause changes your focus completely, and I can’t think […]

In January I spent four days in Rishikesh, during the coldest week in years. Schools in Delhi actually shut down because it was too cold for the kids to sit in class. We slept in an unheated ashram room, wearing all the clothes we brought to keep the cold out. In the morning we would get up and wait outside the chai wallah […]
